A few days ago they introduced a new feature to the Sahel app where you can transfer the car registration from one persons name to another using just the app. Below is a step by step video on how to do that.

Wizz Air Suspends Kuwait Flights
Starting September 1st, Wizz Air has suspended flights to Kuwait. Although I’ve never flown with them, they did have some really great prices and from what I read, it really wasn’t that bad of an experience flying with them.
It’s not clear yet if this is a permanent or just temporary suspension, but right now you can no longer book any Wizz Air flights from Kuwait for the foreseeable future. source
Although I mostly highlight villas and commercial spaces as part of my design highlight series, the AB Penthouse is a rare instance where an apartment stands out for its beautiful design.
Perched atop a building in Salmiya, the AB Penthouse was completed earlier this year, boasting a 320m² area and its own private pool. This stunning penthouse was designed by the local architecture and interior design studio fortytwelve, the same team behind the stylish Ode Eatery.
The space has a lot of beautiful moments but I think my favorite has to be the walk-in closet with the large window that overlooks the sea (pictured above). Check out all the photos from this project on the fortytwelve website.

1963 Alfa Romeo from Kuwait
There is a German car dealer that has a 1963 Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider for sale that was originally sold in Kuwait back in 1963.
According to confirmation from the Alfa Romeo archives, the Spider they’re selling was delivered to Kuwait on 1 April 1963. The car later went to South Africa and then a few years ago was sent to Germany where its now on sale again.
I actually have a copy of the ad above that I had taken from a 1962 issue of the Kuwait Times that showcases the Spider. The dealer for Alfa Romeo back in the early 60s was Kazima Trading Co.
It’s a beautiful car and I kinda feel someone needs to buy it and bring it back to Kuwait. I would have, but at over 40,000KD it’s not really an impulse buy. Link
The Paris 2024 Paralympics started a few days ago and yesterday, Kuwaiti wheelchair racer Faisal Al-Rajhi (@faisal.alrajhi98) won a bronze medal in the T54 5,000m race. The T54 category is for wheelchair athletes with no leg function, but near full arm function.
Faisal is one of three Kuwaiti athletes taking part at the Paralympics with the other two being:
Dhari Buti – Men’s Shot Put – F37
Faisal Sorour – Men’s Shot Put – F42
The F37 category is for athletes competing with co-ordination impairments (hypertonia, ataxia and athetosis).
The F42 category is for athletes competing without prosthesis affected by limb deficiency, leg length difference, impaired muscle power or impaired passive range of movement.
The Paris 2024 Paralympics is taking place from 28 August to 8 September 2024 and the official account of the Kuwait Paralympic Commitee is @kuwaitparalympic
I’m still binge watching House of Cards so haven’t watched anything new this past week and so don’t have anything to recommend. But, there are two things I’m looking forward to this weekend, first is the new series Terminator Zero on Netflix which comes out today, and the second is Kevin Costner’s new Western “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1” which is now available to watch on MAX. I’ve got these two on my to do list this weekend.
Let me know in the comments what you recently watched or planning to watch.

Yesterday CITRA launched new mobile network frequencies in Kuwait which will be used for the upcoming 5G Advanced network (also called 5GA or 5.5G). 5G Advanced has a number of benefits over regular 5G with the main ones being:
- Faster Speeds
- Enhanced Coverage
- Increased Reliability
- Lower Power Consumption
- More accurate device positioning
From my understanding (someone correct me if I’m wrong), 5G and 5G Advanced have the same max speed, but 5G Advanced has the ability to achieve +20% faster speeds more often (for example during peak hours or network congestion).
According to CITRA, 5G Advanced should be available in Kuwait by maximum June 2025. If you want to try it out they have a demo display for the next couple of days at Al Hamra Tower.
Chipotle Opening at The WalK Mall
Chipotle is opening up their second location in Kuwait next week at The Walk Mall in Ardiya. I’ve never been to that mall and so had to google it now to figure out where it is.
Not sure why you’d want to go there unless you live near it, but if you really dislike The Avenues and want to have Chipotle somewhere else, you’re in luck.
I’m a Victim of Debit Card Fraud
My dog woke me up this morning at 5:30AM for his morning walk, and as I was leaving the house I noticed I had 6 new SMS messages from last night. When I opened them, it took me a few seconds to make sense of it.
The messages all came in at around 10:58PM Kuwait time when I was already fast asleep.
- Your account has been debited with GBP 0.00 at 19:58:32PM
-
Your OTP for card ending with XXXX at Microsoft, 1249.99 GBP is XXXXX. Do not share etc..
-
There is insufficient funds in your account to authorize your transaction at 19:59:24
-
Your account has been debited with GBP 279.99 at 20:00:32
-
Your account has been debited with GBP 279.99 at 20:02:12
-
There is insufficient funds in your account to authorize your transaction at 20:03:15
Being half asleep because it was so early in the morning, I had to really work my brain to try and figure out if this was me or not. I’ve placed pre-orders before on things that get charged and shipped months later, and so I was trying to figure out if I might have ordered something from Microsoft months ago. I logged into my NBK bank app, clicked on my credit card and saw I had 0 pending transactions. I then assumed maybe this was my work’s credit card (I get those messages to my number as well) and that one of the employees might have been trying to purchase something for work.
But, I looked at the last 4 digits and it wasn’t the work credit card. Then it hit me, this wasn’t my credit card, it was my debit card! So I went back into the app, clicked on my debit card and checked under pending transactions, and sure enough there were two. This wasn’t me, so I called my bank up right away to report the fraudulent transactions.
The call lasted exactly 20 minutes which I think was a bit too long, at least for me that early in the morning while walking the dog. The first thing the bank did was lock my cards, lock my access to the app and online banking website, write a report up after asking me a bunch of questions, and then submit a request for a new debit card. In the next 24 hours, someone from the fraud claim request department is going to call me for more information.
I guess this was bound to happen eventually even though I’m really careful and smart about where I use my cards. But, I didn’t think it would happen with my main debit card since I never use that online. I don’t even use my debit card to withdraw money from ATM machine’s when I travel, I don’t even physically use it anymore since Apple Pay became available nearly 2 years ago! And thats whats confusing about all this.
If this was my credit card I can at least try and imagine how it might happened. I don’t use my credit card on dodgy websites, but I do use it online a lot so I can come up with plenty of scenarios on how someone could have gotten my credit card number. But my debit card? I have questions!
- This is a brand new card I was issued around 20 days ago
-
I don’t have my debit card number saved on any website since I use my credit card for subscriptions or online purchases
-
I just got back from a trip to Greece but I only used Apple Pay while there
-
I don’t use my cards to withdraw money from ATM machines when I travel so a card skimmer couldn’t have been used
-
Based on the messages I got, the bank requested an OTP number for the large 1249.99 GBP transaction. But the message right after says the order couldn’t go through because I had insufficient funds. Does that mean whoever tried using the card had somehow gotten the OTP number but the order didn’t go through because I didn’t have any money? Or does the bank ask for the OTP first and at the same time check to see if I have funds which is why I got both messages? I’m curious about that.
-
Finally, why did NBK allow the two other transactions without requiring an OTP or Pin code? It’s not like they were small amounts, they were 100KD+ each and I’ve been asked for an OTP for much smaller amounts
It’s really really odd, only because this was my debit card AND it’s brand new, I got it issued earlier this month. It’s the same old debit card number I’ve had for years, but with a brand new expiry date and CCV number. It’s been around 20 days since I got this new card so it isn’t difficult to know where exactly I’ve used it. Physically, like actually taking the card out and touching or inserting it into a machine, I think I’ve only used it at a couple of ATM machines, and only locally. That’s it. The rest of the time I’ve used it through Apple Pay. So, brand new debit card, with a brand new CCV number, how did they get it? I have a lot of questions to ask the fraudulent department when they call me!
Right now I’m leaning towards the idea that one of the ATM’s I used must have had a skimmer installed. I think I only used two ATM machines with this new card, a Warba machine inside a Trolley near me, and a Burgan Bank drive thru machine. So I might pass by them today and try and see if there is a skimmer installed, in case the bank’s hasn’t already found it.
Update: So I just got a call from the fraud department. The amount is still pending so they’ve submitted a claim to release it back into my account and I should get it in around a week. That’s the good news.
I then discussed how this could happen and although they’re still investigating, the person I spoke to seemed to be leaning towards the fraud happening online. He made it seem like ATM skimmers weren’t a thing anymore or at least they weren’t a thing in Kuwait because our ATM machines are newer and more advanced. I told him that it’s a new card issued just 20 days ago and I hadn’t used it online. He said he could see I used it with Talabat and PayPal. When I asked if they would inform me after their investigation where the fraud happened, he said they wouldn’t.
The bank would inform the other party about the fraud but not me. So for example if the fraud was due to Talabat having some sort of security leak, they wouldn’t tell me about it. I thought that was very odd.
Anyway, if I get more information I’ll update this post but I think for now they’ve considered the issue sorted with me. Other than my new ATM card and the amount refunded back to me, I don’t think the bank will be communicating anything else with me about this.
Update2: Looks like the issue might be with Talabat! A friend just sent me a link to an article on @dailyarabi that points to an article about a database belonging to Talabat being leaked.
Update3: I got my money back a week later.
Lufthansa has decided to cancel the Kuwait – Frankfurt route with the last flight scheduled for September 15, 2024.
Lufthansa has been landing in Kuwait since 1963, over 60 years. They’re blaming the lack of carrying capacity caused by late delivery of new aircrafts from the manufacturer. They’re also planning to reevaluate and improving its network of routes, so they might eventually fly from Kuwait again.
Last year KLM suspended flights to Kuwait blaming lack of profitability. I personally stopped flying both KLM and Lufthansa since Kuwait Airways got the new planes. I just find the Kuwait Airways timings so much better since they fly out in the morning instead of the middle of the night. I’m assuming other people are doing the same.
Update: Seems the Times Kuwait article might be wrong. According to another article, Lufthansa is temporarily suspending flights until September 15 due to the situation in the region. I don’t trust newspapers in Kuwait so I’d believe this website over Times Kuwait. Link
Update2: A reader sent me the screenshot above which was a mid August update that was sent to travel agencies. According to Lufthansa in the screenshot, they decided to discontinue the Frankfurt Kuwait connection from September 16 onwards. Lufthansa currently suspended flights to the region till September 15 due to the situation in the region. This notice is basically saying that even after the 15th they won’t be operating out of Kuwait.
Saving Failaka for Future Generations
There are currently plans to transform Failaka Island into a major tourism resort, which sounds great—except Failaka is also a significant archaeological and historical site. That’s why I’m glad to hear that initial steps are being taken to protect it.
The National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters (NCCAL) and the World Monuments Fund signed a memorandum of understanding a few days ago to enlist Failaka Island in the UNESCO’s world heritage list. Dating back 4,200 years, the island has witnessed five different civilizations and was last inhabited 34 years ago, before the 1990 invasion.
There are several benefits to designating Failaka as a World Heritage site. It would boost tourism, attract funding from international bodies, NGOs, and governments, and provide access to UNESCO’s technical expertise for conservation. Most importantly, it would also raise awareness and encourage the government and authorities to prioritize protecting the island’s cultural, historical, and natural value. This includes not only archaeological sites, but also other significant historical buildings on the island.
The first step now is to study the island, identify key heritage sites, and determine how they can be utilized for cultural tourism. Once the study is complete, the file will be submitted to UNESCO.
I can’t stress enough how important this step is for preserving the island for future generations. Thank you to everyone involved in making this happen. @kw_nccal
It’s a slow week since I’m out of the country so really haven’t watched anything new except for one show, Bad Monkey. It stars Vince Vaughn whom I’m a fan of, so I’m watching it because of him. I just started so don’t have strong opinions on the show yet but it was good enough to get me started at least.

Souq Al-Mubarakiya 1945 & 1949
Sir Wilfred Patrick Thesiger was a British military officer, explorer, and writer. His first visit to the Gulf was in 1945, shortly after the Second World War, when he accepted a position as a researcher with the British Middle East Anti-Locust Unit (MEALU).
Based in Saudi Arabia, Sir Wilfred was able to travel to Kuwait and Bahrain, thanks to having access to a car. He made a second visit to Kuwait in 1949.
During both trips, Sir Wilfred captured numerous photographs, including some of Souk Mubarakiya, which I found particularly interesting and am sharing in this post.
These pictures are part of the collection at the Pitt Rivers Museum and are available to view online. If you’re interested in seeing more of the photos he took during his time in Kuwait, you can explore them at prm.web.ox.ac.uk or by checking the two links below:

So many places have closed down in T4, in fact, once you pass security the only places with food still left open are Raising Cane’s, Shake Shack, Starbucks, McDonalds and Al Rifai nuts. So if you’re boycotting brands, your only option for food and coffee is basically Al Rifai.
