New: Kuwait Society for Animal Welfare

Here’s some good news to start the week. The Kuwait Society for Animal Welfare (KSAW) is a newly established animal rescue nonprofit organization, recently approved by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour.

KSAW is the latest animal rescue organization to receive official status, and despite being newly launched, it has already outlined its goals, which include:

- Organizing vaccination, spay, neuter, and health care campaigns for stray animals to limit the spread of diseases and epidemics that can be transmitted to humans.

  • Rehabilitating stray animals and pets abandoned by their owners and putting them up for adoption. This will play a role in reducing the number of neglected animals suffering on the street and the resulting environmental and health risks.

  • Holding free educational events and courses on a wide range of animal-related topics, including responsible pet ownership; the benefit of the relationship between people and animals, especially children; and the phenomenon of cruelty to animals developing into violence against people.

Although there are already animal rescue groups in Kuwait doing an incredible job saving and caring for animals, being an official nonprofit organization comes with several advantages like the ability to partner with international NGOs, collaborate with the local government on animal rescue campaigns, and to legally request support.

This is wonderful news for the welfare of animals in Kuwait. To stay updated on the activities of the Kuwait Society for Animal Welfare, follow them at @ksaw_q8

The Kuwait Baseball Club Since 1979

Baseball has been played in Kuwait since the late ’70s, yet not many people know about it. It feels like one of Kuwait’s best-kept secrets.

I love catching a Friday game when the weather’s perfect. The baseball fields are green and really lush, so it always feels like you’re in the heart of the US with kids in baseball gear roaming around, while spectators enjoy lemonade and corndogs.

Since the weather is getting better, registration for the 2024/25 season is now open. If you’re looking for an activity for your kid, or maybe you’re an adult looking to play baseball for fun and socializing, here are the details:

Registration is open till October 16 and there are three divisions:

Youth Baseball (Coed) – Ages 4+
Registration fee is 100KD for the season

Girls “Fast Pitch” Softball – Ages 14+
Registration fee is 100KD for the season

Adult Softball (Coed) – Ages 13+
Registration fee is 50KD for the season

The fees cover the cost of field staff, field maintenance, and baseball equipment (bats, balls, and tees). All you need to bring is your own glove.

Practice is twice a week, one day in the middle of the week and Friday. Once the games start, Friday becomes game day.

Baseball season runs from October 20 to February 23, while the adult baseball season runs from October 4 to April 25. The baseball fields are located at The Hunting & Equestrian Club right off the 6th Ring Road, near Murouj.

If you’re interested in signing up you can WhatsApp them on 97883026. Their instagram account is @q8baseball

Movies & TV Shows to Watch this Weekend

This past week, I watched the season finale of Industry—what a great season! I loved it. The main cast is so incredible that you almost forget Kit Harington (Jon Snow) and Sarah Goldberg (Barry) are part of it.

It’s hard to pick a favorite character, but if I had to choose, I’d say Sagar Radia, who plays Rishi, and Ken Leung, who plays Eric and, as I just realized, was also in Lost.

If you haven’t watched Industry yet, you definitely should, it’s one of the best active shows at the moment.

I also finished binge watching The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, and also caught up on Slow Horses which I’m not enjoying as much this season. Same with Tulsa King, not really enjoying the second season as much so far but I’m only two episodes in.

I was just checking the “What’s Next” section in the app Next Episode which is what I use to keep track of all the shows, and here are a few shows I can’t wait for.

Elsbeth in 15 days
What We Do in the Shadows in 19 days
The Diplomat in 29 days
Yellowstone in 39 days
Dune: Prophecy in 43 days
Silo in 44 days

Lots of good stuff coming up!

Let me know in the comments what you recently watched or planning to watch.

Before and After: Fireej Al Watya, Jibla

I love these before and after shots taken by Nada Design Studio of a public walkway project they worked on.

The public walkway is located in the Behbehani Complex, next to the church in the city. Built in the 1940s, the complex always felt neglected to me, yet full of potential— which is why I love what they did.

Lush’s Watermelon Soap Helps Kids in Gaza

Over the summer, Lush released a watermelon soap with 100% of the profits going toward childhood mental health services in Palestine, and it has recently become available at Lush in Kuwait.

The “Watermelon Slice” feels right at home on their shelves, which is why I love this simple idea so much. Right next to the watermelon slices, they have the following message written:

You can’t wash away the trauma children experience during conflicts – but when you buy this soap, 100% of the profits will be donated solely to projects providing urgently needed professional mental health support and trauma counselling for children in Gaza and the West Bank.

Lush sells the watermelon slices by weight, so the thicker the slice, the more it costs and the more you donate. I love it.

Register your .kw Domain

Yesterday, CITRA launched direct domain registration services for .kw domains. Not sure what the process was before but I’m assuming it was complicated or required you to physically visit a location and apply. But, starting today you can just get the domains through the www.kw website. I just tried to register a .com.kw domain and it asked me for the following:

You will be required to upload the following documents in the registrar portal after the successful payment:

1- Valid Commercial License from Ministry of Commerce and Industry

2- Authorized Signee Certificate

3- Civil ID of Authorized Signee

4- Trademark Certificate (if domain name is not related to the commercial license)

So you basically can’t just register whatever you want, you’ll need to be an officially registered business in Kuwait. For more info, head over to www.kw

Old vs New iPad – What’s the big frigin’ difference?!

Back in 2018 I picked up a 12.9″ iPad Pro and I’ve been using it daily ever since. It’s my watch YouTube while in bed display and when I travel it’s my watch my shows and movies on the plane display. I also use it for my Apple News+ magazine subscriptions, and I think that’s about it.

A couple of days ago I made an impulse buy, I ended up buying the new M4 iPad Pro 13″. I wasn’t planning to, my wife didn’t want her 12.9″ iPad Pro and instead wanted to take my iPad Mini, so I figured I could sell both her iPad Pro and mine and get a new one instead. It was just a thought and I started price browsing when I spotted the 11″ iPad Pro on WiBi for KD275 and it was a lot cheaper than I was expecting it to cost. I then checked the price of the 13 Pro and it was KD335 so I was like I’m just going to get it now and then sell my other 2 iPads later.

Now I’m kinda regretting it. There really isn’t anything different between the two based on my very basic requirements. I thought maybe the screen would be a huge difference since the new iPad Pro’s have OLED displays but unless I have the two iPad’s side by side I barely could notice the difference. Then I figured the new iPad would be much lighter, but again unless you’ve got two in each hand, you’re not going to notice.

One thing I do notice, but also requires my other iPad next to me is the thickness. Holding the iPad without the case does feel substantially nicer on the new iPad because it’s thinner and slightly lighter. So one benefit but I don’t use my iPad enough in that position for it to make any difference for me.

A second positive with the new iPad is the Smart Folio case, the regular thin Apple case that covers the back and front. The case now allows you to adjust the viewing angle to one that works best for you while the previous case on my older iPad just had one position.

So basically what I want to say is if you already have an older iPad Pro, the newest one isn’t that different. In my case it’s not different at all since I just watch YouTube on it 99% of the time. So I definitely regret buying it.

If you’re interested in picking up a used iPad Pro 12.9″, check the classifieds section in the next couple of days since I’ll be listing both there.

Winter Wonderland Season 3 – Whats New?

The third season of Winter Wonderland is around the corner, and this year brings a few changes.

Last year, Winter Wonderland opened its doors in October, but this year the opening is being pushed back to November when the weather is expected to be more agreeable.

The 2024/2025 season will be shorter, as the park is scheduled to close at the end of February, just before Ramadan begins.

Last year, one of the main complaints was the late weekend opening hours (3:30 PM). This year, I’ve been told the park will open earlier, though no specific time has been shared.

There will also be a few new rides this year.

Many will be delighted to know that ticket prices are being reduced.

Finally, a new addition this year is the TEC loyalty program (above). TEC quietly launched this feature in their app, allowing you to collect points with every purchase at any TEC project. These points can then be redeemed for tickets or game credits at the park.

To stay posted on Winter Wonderland, you can follow their account @wwlkuwait or @tecq8

If you want to see the construction progress of the park, the vlogger @mohamedalwazzan lives across the street and tends to post videos anytime major work is taking place.

Michael Lives Forever Concert in Kuwait

I never got the chance to see Michael Jackson live, but this might be the next best thing. Michael Lives Forever is a mega tribute concert, with faithful reproductions of his iconic costumes and choreography. This isn’t just a random tribute show, this is the longest-running and most successful Michael Jackson tribute show in the world. Like properly legit.

After watching a couple of videos of the show, it looks like from where I’ll be sitting, I wouldn’t be able to tell it wasn’t the real Michael Jackson performing. The show was actually conceived, choreographed, and brought to life by Lavelle Smith Jr., the renowned choreographer who worked directly with Michael Jackson for over 25 years. The show has toured around the world and has been seen by over a millions fans to date.

Sahel in English is Now Available

Sahel in English just launched an hour ago. To activate the English language you need to first update the software to the latest version. Then once you are in the app click on the menu icon in the top corner, and then the 3rd menu option with the circular icon and select English.

First impression, it seems buggy? For example, I went to the “Vehicle registration renewal” section under services, and when I click the list to see my cars, I can’t see any of them, I just get a blank white page.

On the main profile page, if I click on Ministry of Interior and then on Driving License, the “kind” of license is listed in Arabic and when I click on it, I don’t see the expiry date but it shows in the Arabic version.

Let me know if you find any other bugs.
