Rare photos of the Kuwait National Assembly

I came across these images of the Kuwait National Assembly by accident. I had recommended a friend buy a book called “Jørn Utzon Logbook Vol. IV: Kuwait National Assembly“, which covers its construction but she told me it was sold out. I started searching for a copy for her online when I stumbled across images of the National Assembly I hadn’t seen before, not even in his book on the project.

If you aren’t familiar, the Kuwait National Assembly was designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, the same architect behind the iconic Sydney Opera House. His design was well thought out. He organized the main building complex in a way inspired by traditional Arabian bazaars. All the departments (offices, meeting rooms, reception areas, the library, Assembly Hall, and more) are arranged along a central street, similar to the layout of a bazaar. Each department is made up of modules of varying sizes built around small patios or courtyards, all connected to the central street by side alleys. The complex was designed to be expandable at any time by adding new modules, allowing it to grow outward continuously similar to bazaars.

The canopy, or tent-like shade at the entrance that gives the building its distinctive look, came to him after seeing a photo of two Arabs fishing on the shore under a small sail from their boat. The sail was stretched between two poles with a beam across the top, creating a simple shaded area. He loved the way the shadow looked and thought it would be a beautiful idea to use in the building.

Jørn’s Logbook Vol. IV focuses on the Kuwait National Assembly project and includes behind-the-scenes documents, original drawings, stories, and photos of the construction. It was published in 2008, and copies were still available as recently as 2019, but they seem to have sold out since then.

Majority of the photos I’ve shared in this post were taken from the Utzon Archive, the rest are from my copy of the book. If you want to check them all out and get access to the hi-res images, click here.

The photo above is the one I think inspired him since it was included inside his book.

The video above is also from their archive, I like it because if you forward around 2 minutes in you get to see a full 360 of the city from above. I think the video was shot from the old Kuwait Airways building.

Movies & TV Shows to Watch this Weekend

This week I started watching a bunch of shows:

Bad Thoughts
Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace
Toast of London
Zero Day

Darkplace and Toast of London both star Matt Berry. Darkplace is hilarious, the whole thing is shot and acted like a cheap old tv show and I love it. Bad Thoughts was fine, most of the funny stuff I had already watched as TikTok clips. Zero Day I’m two episodes in and don’t really like it but trying to stick to it.

I also started rewatching Transparent again, used to really love the series and it still holds up really well. Super easy to binge watch as well.

Have you watched anything interesting lately? Let us know in the comments.

Movies & TV Shows to Watch this Weekend

Can we talk about Andor? I just binge watched the last 3 episodes of the second season last night and I’m so sad the series is over. It’s by far my favorite Star Wars series/movie/anything. It also feels like the least Star Warsy Star Wars and I think it’s because of the amount of depth, seriousness and grittiness the series has. The main hero also doesn’t have a light saber, he doesn’t have a cool outfit or anything out of the ordinary, he’s mostly just a normal person.

This is also probably the only Star Wars that also makes you empathize or fall in love with Imperial characters. The show is just so insanely good.

Then you also have the beautiful visuals and the incredible music like in the Mon Mothma dancing scene above. I think I actually might rewatch the series from the start again so I can enjoy it without all the anxiety and suspense. And then I’ll probably rewatch Rogue One since it takes place right after Andor in the Star Wars universe. If you haven’t watched it yet, please watch it.

Smashing Pumpkins are Coming to Bahrain

Last night I found out that Smashing Pumpkins are going to be performing in Bahrain in October. For those of you who’ve been following my blog from the start you might already know they’re my favorite band. My first blog template even included “Breathing under water and living under glass” in the heading which is from their song Thru the Eyes of Ruby.

Presale tickets went on sale this morning, there were only two kinds available, General Admission and something called Premium Package which what I understood is the same but includes free beverages and canopies. No idea if beverages includes alcohol or just soft drinks so I got the General Admission tickets.

But, I really really need to find a way to get backstage access, so if anyone can help me out I’ll owe you one!

The last time I saw them live was 10 years ago when I was in LA as part of the The End of Times tour with Marlyn Manson. I shot the video above at that concert.

Photos from when I visited the USS Harry S. Truman Aircraft Carrier

This is totally random but, a couple of weeks ago I read an article about an F-18 fighter jet that fell off a US Aircraft carrier, it was semi going viral because it sounded ridiculous and then this morning I saw another headline about another jet falling off the same aircraft carrier. Turns out both jets fell of the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft, the same aircraft carrier I was invited to visit back in 2016.

I was going through all the photos I took that day and realized I didn’t really share much so I decided to do a photo dump. If you want to check out all the photos I took that day they’re now in Flickr and you can check them out here.

I took a few short videos that day which I merged into one longer video and I uploaded that to YouTube which you can watch below.

Printing Car Registration after Vehicle Transfer using Sahel

Last week I transferred one of my cars from my friend’s name to my name using Sahel. The process was super easy, like I can’t believe it was that easy. From start to finish it took less than 5 minutes using the guide in the video below.

But, now I need to get a physical copy of the car registration since I need to send my car abroad. Does anyone know what the process is?

Lippy Links vs Gummy Links Drama

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Lippy Links (@lippylinks)

Came across this bit of drama on tiktok yesterday. Seems a local influencer is being accused of copying someone else’s product. The product copied is something called Lippy Links and the inventor published a video calling out the influencer. The video has 138K views on instagram and over 3 million views on tiktok.

I thought that was pretty standard since copying is fairly common here. But then I watched another video by @rise_kw where he highlights the fact the influencer had published a video detailing her struggles trying to create the Gummy Links. Now watching the video below I would imagine the video is embarrassing but I’m assuming she doesn’t care because the video is still up.

So much drama.

Movies & TV Shows to Watch

Last week someone recommended watching Paradise on Hulu. I already had it on my need to watch list but I guess I needed a push and I’m glad I got it because it was one of my favorite new shows I watched this year.

I don’t want to spoil it even slightly, but the first episode started off really slow until a big twist right at the end that kept me hooked for the remaining season. It’s one of those shows where I couldn’t wait to get back home so I could continue watching. Highly recommended and I have to say, Hulu has been really killing it with their content, it’s my favorite streaming service right now.

I also started watching the new season of Black Mirror, only two episodes in and so far it’s good. I also just got a notification that Rami Yousef’s new animated show #1 Happy Family USA came out today. So I guess I’m watching that this weekend as well.

Have you watched anything interesting lately? Let us know in the comments.

Ed Westwick, from the Netflix show White Gold is coming to Kuwait later this month to take part at Quantum Con. Ed was also on the show Gossip Girls as well as in the movies Children of Men and Son of Rambow.

If you haven’t watched White Gold, you should, it’s great. But also it’s super random that he’s coming to Kuwait.

Physical Driving License Now Available for Expats

Expats will now be able to get a physical copy of their driving license. Sounds weird that this is something new but until recently the Ministry of Interior had stopped printing driving licenses for expats, we only had access to a digital copy. Not a big deal if you just drive in Kuwait but the digital copy wouldn’t be accepted anywhere else in the world. This means if you traveled you wouldn’t be able to rent a car which sucks.

Thankfully the MOI has now changed their mind and allowing us to get printed driving licenses again. Mine expires next month which is perfect timing. The only caveat is that we now have to pay 10KD to get a physical copy which I don’t think is an issue. Source

Movies & TV Shows to Watch

This past week I started watching two new shows. David Blaine: Do Not Attempt and Deli Boys. Not sure why the David Blaine show has a 7.8 on IMDB. I didn’t think it was that interesting. There isn’t any of his usual illusions/magic, and instead it’s more him performing stunts. Just feels to me like someone with a lot of money hiring the best people to help him accomplish a stunt which isn’t as dangerous anymore since he’s hired the best people to overlook the whole thing. Like when Tom Cruise does his own stunts in movies, you know he’s not in danger.

Deli Boys on the other hand is fun and silly, I’m like it.

The new season of The Handmaid’s Tale also just started. It’s been so long since the last season I forgot what the storyline was and so found the first episode boring. Not gonna continue watching it unless it’s background TV.

Need to start watching The Studio as well as the new season of Hacks. Black Mirror is out today. Oh and I watched the finale of The Kardashians and White Lotus. White Lotus was great, The Kardashians, not so much. This season of The Kardashians was just super boring and not as funny as the previous seasons. All the scenes that involved Lamar or anything dealing with that story line was just incredibly boring. Then they brought it back again for the last episode? CRINGE

Anyway, have you watched anything interesting lately? Let us know in the comments.

Craig David is Coming to Kuwait

Popular British R&B singer Craig David is coming to Kuwait for a live performance in May. I used to be a fan of his music back when I was in university, so it’s pretty random that he’s coming to perform here. He’s known for hits like “7 Days,” “Fill Me In,” and “Walking Away,” and he recently sold out The O2 Arena in London as part of his 25th Anniversary Commitment Tour.

Craig David will be performing for one night only in Kuwait at The Arena on May 2nd. I’ve been told tickets could potentially go on sale as soon as tomorrow, but follow @thearenakuwait for the official announcement.

Update: Tickets are now on sale. Here are the ticket prices:

Bronze: 30KD
Silver: 40KD
Gold: 50KD
Platinum: 60KD
Diamond: 70KD
Royal: 80KD

Metallica Immersive Concert on the Apple Vision Pro

Back in November I posted a 6 months later update on my Apple Vision Pro and I mentioned my usage dropped considerably since I first got it. That is still the case now, maybe more so even. Basically, I tend to mostly use the AVP whenever Apple releases a new immersive video, or someone releases an app or game that is a unique experience that can only be experienced on the AVP.

Recently, Apple released a Metallica immersive concert for the AVP and I watched it last night and wow.

Firstly, I like Metallica. I was actually going to their concert back in 2017 when I was in LA and I chose to miss it because I was at the beach with family and friends and was having too good a time to want to leave. I don’t regret missing the concert, well maybe just a bit, but I do wish I had gotten to see them live.

This immersive video is like the next best thing to actually being at the live concert. It’s hard to describe to someone who hasn’t experienced any Apple Vision Pro immersive content, but it really makes you feel like you’re there. The video is around 20 minutes long and I think it covered 3 or 4 songs tops. The perspective changes, sometimes you’re right in front of James Hetfield as he’s screaming into the mic, sometimes you’re with Lars at the drums, sometimes you’re watching from the top of the stadium or down in front of the crowd. It’s all 3D of course, and it’s all in Apple’s immersive 180-degree 8K video format.

I’ve never experienced Enter Sandman the same way as I did watching them perform it live last night. I really really loved it and it’s just another preview of what’s to come years down the line when AR/VR goggles/glasses become more affordable, accessible and common.

It’s another perfect example of what I was saying back in November, the AVP is really just a technology preview of things that will come in the future. No one should really buy one unless they have extra cash lying around, but it’s definitely something people should experience if they have the opportunity to.
